About The Ohio Housing Council

The Ohio Housing Council (OHC) was founded in 1999 as a statewide association of affordable housing professionals whose goal is to make a difference in Ohio’s affordable housing industry. The mission of OHC is to advocate and educate on behalf of our members to increase the quality and supply of affordable housing in the State of Ohio. OHC is committed to providing our members with current legislative awareness, a forum for voicing legislative and programmatic concerns and ongoing comprehensive educational opportunities.

About The Role

Since its founding, OHC has not had a full time Executive Director and has been volunteer board member driven. However, given our members’ priorities, we have created this position because we feel that it is time to have a seasoned housing professional assume this important leadership role for our industry.

This role serves as the Executive Director of the Ohio Housing Council and provides oversight over its affiliate organizations. The Executive Director develops and oversees the implementation of OHC’s corporate strategy for mission attainment, impact, growth and sustainability. This involves the standard Executive Director functions of planning, board management, policy advocacy, staff and contractor supervision, communications, fundraising, and external relationships. The Executive Director is the ambassador for a network of Ohio’s top affordable housing developers, funders, and stakeholders over a wide variety of affordable housing activities, but with a primary focus on affordable housing developed utilizing the low-income housing tax credit. The Executive Director frequently represents and advocates for the Ohio affordable housing sector with the Ohio Governor’s Office, Legislature, state agencies such as the Ohio Housing Finance Agency, local and federal governments, financial institutions and other funders.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • Reports to the OHC Board of The Executive Director and the Board must work together as partners. Each arm of leadership draws upon its own unique strengths and abilities. The Executive Director and the Board have joint responsibility for developing and maintaining a strong working relationship and a system for sharing information.
  • Lead and direct employees (if any) and contractors, including our lobbyist team.
  • Advance the strategic priorities of the organization. These strategic priorities range from advancing the work of the organization, to bringing systemic change within the industry. The Executive Director will lead OHC in creating its first strategic plan as an organization and the execution of the plan.
  • Demonstrate deep knowledge of affordable housing industry programs and funding. Recommend and execute priorities for influencing program development, policy and funding.
    • Maintain significant and important relationships with member leaders, government officials, legislators, funders, investors and other industry stakeholders who may impact the affordable housing industry. Must proactively handle critical and controversial issues.
    • Manage the day-to-day operations of the organization directly or through the support of employees or contractors.
    • Responsible for financial planning, organizational budget, and stewardship of OHC’s financial position with support from employees or contractors. This includes OHC’s operational and fundraising strategy.
    • Responsible for member recruitment and retention efforts.

      Qualifications

      Experience

      • 5 years of affordable housing program advocacy experience or 10 years of other industry program advocacy experience.
      • Leadership experience working with a wide range of corporate, government, and foundation partners.
      • Experience as an affordable housing development practitioner or financial partner is a plus.

      Skills & Knowledge

      • Excellent writing and communications skills needed for external audiences, employees and contractors, and the board.
      • Public speaking and facilitation of meetings.
      • Fundraising and program advocacy skills.
      • Ability to understand the nuances of affordable housing development and finance and then distil them down to key principles for policy makers.

      Other

      This position is currently a remote position but will be required to spend significant time in Columbus, Ohio meeting with key stakeholders.

      Compensation

      The compensation range and benefits package is commensurate with experience and qualifications and is based on comparisons to peer organizations.
